In this modern day we live, more people are broken by self-centredness. The only important thing that matters today are the big and wonderful me! What can I gain from this life or in the position I am held? It is a constant battle to undermine each other and to be the centre of attention. Is this why the human race has become so unhappy and “sick” these days? The more we concentrate on ourselves, the more we go to pieces, not only in spirit, but also in mind and body.

It is if self-centred people are a magnet to attract unhappiness and causes a ripple effect in their surroundings, making everyone they come into contact also miserable. They may draw attention and what comes with it to themself, but it seems that sadness, disillusionment follows suit in the physical as well as spiritual form, only to leave them empty and bitter.

Are there no more joy left in us, the supposedly crown of creation, to live away from the self and towards each other? What a sad and empty world we are creating at this day and age.

Maybe there is much truth in the following:

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it…

Ethos and modern media.

A few days ago I read an article about Aristotle and his idea regarding the messenger and the message. Please, I am no scholar of Aristotle and my knowledge of Greek stopped short after baklava. Aristotle said that the messenger or bringer of news should have three things namely: ethos, pathos and logia. I understood that who ever brings the message or news to the people or who it is intended for should have ethos or the correct ethics. Without the correct ethics the person bringing the messages loses all credibility. Pathos or sympathy is the part where the listener wants to know if the messenger shares their hope, fears and longings.
Are there “love” or empathy in the heart of the messenger or is he/she becoming just another tinkling cymbal. Logia is the verbal or word part. Does the person have something to say.

Ethos and pathos I see as character qualities. Something we all should have and display in our daily lifes.

This made me wonder how much of this is really relevant in the modern media and how they tell and portray a story to the public? Maybe it is a case that the public has become to “shallow” and selfish to question the credibility of the “messenger”, in this case the newspaper or television. The attitude is “I saw it on television so it must be true”. Personally these days I have very little faith in newspapers or television news. Do they really tell the true story or do they twist it as win over the viewers sympathy? Do Aristotle’s view apply today? I doubt!

So liewe mense, gemeente lede en susters van die Koeksister Brigade, dit is daardie tyd van die jaar wat baie mense verwelkom en ander net hoop dit gaan vinnig verby. Hoe dit ook al moet wees in jou lewe is vir jou om te kies. Ek wil darem net namens die fees komitee julle almal ‘n geseënde en voorspoedige feestyd toewens tot ‘n volgende keer.

Ek weet nie wanneer ek weer hier sal inval nie, aangesien ek rekenaarloos gaan wees vanaf Januarie 2010 en soos dinge nou lyk twyfel ek of ek ‘n abakus sal kan bekostig. Ek gaan darem so bietjie in die pragtige Kaap kuier met al die see, sand en wyn. Ek hoop almal hou lekker vakansie en is goed uitgerus vir 2010, die sokker en al die manewalis wat die regering uitdink om die massas mee besig te hou.

Ek weet dit is maar stil hier in my geweste, maar dit is seker maar tekens dat die jaar na sy einde toe staan en daar nie veel is of te sê nie. So paar dinge het in die wêreld gebeur. Nie dat dit my vreeslik verras het nie. Dit was tog voorspelbaar as mens jou gesonde denke en verstand gebruik. Ek moet egter erken dat ek nie vreeslike voorstander en geloofwaardigheid het in klimaats verandering nie. Persoonlik glo ek dat die aarde deur klimaat siklusse gaan en nie as gevolg van die mensdom nie. Moenie my verkeerd verstaan nie. Ek is voorstander van herwinning en “groen energie” en al die ander dinge wat die waters en grond vergiftig en dat ons tog moet oplet oor wat ons doen. So die skandaal wat oor die afgelope paar dae skielik na vore gekom het oor hoe die “slimmes” data vervals het en verslae geskryf het en ons ou normale ou mensies bevark het, bevestig maar net weereens hoe ons alles sommer net aanvaar omdat een slimjan so sê. Die ander ding wat glad nie my ou troontjie omgegooi het nie, was die aankondiging dat Dubai ook nou insolvent is. Dit nogal met geleende geld. Kapitalisme is ook nie die antwoord vir alles nie. Wonder wat gaan van die Kaapse Waterfront word?

Self gaan dit goed. Dinge raak besig en ek geniet my 3 dag week ten volle. Sal ten minste uitgerus wees as ek met my 5 weke vakansie in die Kaap rondloop.

Dit is nou vir eers al.

Why is it we always wait for someones funeral to tell him/her how much we miss them and what a wonderful person he or she was?
It is something that really bugs me when I attend a funeral service and they ramble on about how wonderful he/she was etc. Personally I think it is a bit too late now to do your praises. Why didn’t we use the opportunity, when the person was alive to tell him/her how wonderful they are or fix the wrongs we caused. We only have today to correct the mistakes. Why leave it till tomorrow, which maybe to late and all you have is regrets. Tomorrow is a privilege few of us may not see. Now is the time to go to that person and apologise or ask why they behave the way they do. Mend the broken. Spend a few extra hours with a friend, make the time. Is life meant to be lived with hatred and regrets that will only eat your soul away like a cancer.

Today is the day we have to go to the persons and fix the wrongs!
Today is the day we buy flowers for a loved one!
Today is the day we go and apologise!
Today is the day we can be free from regrets due to unsolved vendettas!

Because today maybe the last change, as tomorrow may never come!
